The site of the Krapina Neanderthal "Hušnjakovo" is protected as the first paleontological nature monument in Croatia and is among the most important Paleoanthropologic sites in the world. Exceptional richness of its findings and the discovery of the largest habitats of the Neanderthal man, thanks to geologist and paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger, to this day remains unsurpassed wellspring of modern scientific information. There were about nine hundred human fossil bones, numerous fossil remains of Pleistocene animals and more than a thousand pieces of stone tools from the Paleolithic period. This rich paleontological site corresponds to the time from before 125 000 years.
New Krapina Neanderthal Museum opened in February 2010, and follows the idea of excellence founded by Dragutin Gorjanović, a scientist who is announcing a unique find fossil man from Krapina. The authors of the project and realization of the museum, architect Zeljko Kovacic and paleontologist James Radovčić together with numerous associates have set an excellent museum in an interactive way interpreted the phenomenon of appearance of man. The permanent exhibition of the museum was conceived in 18 thematic sections that take us far into the past, with the oldest history of the Earth to the beginning of civilization and the modern age, with special emphasis on the famous discovery in Krapina and the importance of the collection of the Krapina Neanderthal.
Everyday life of these ancient population is shown as part of the largest diorama of its kind in the world, and is a community of Neanderthals of different ages and sexes, gathered in a semi-cave around the fireplace.
Krapina Neanderthal Museum is one of the most modern museums in the world that contains many interactive features that speak to all the senses of visitors. Multimedia installations, films, kiosk, virtual tours and holograms amaze visitors a special experience are excellent museum workshop. With years of educational programs such as the Summer geological school, the museum organizes special guided tours and other interesting educational programs and interactive workshops and play in nature.
